Compensation Amounts

Complete breakdown of APPR compensation amounts for flight delays, cancellations, denied boarding, and baggage issues in Canada.

Flight delay & cancellation — Large carriers

Air Canada and WestJet are classified as large carriers. They must pay: $400 CAD for 3-6 hour delays, $700 CAD for 6-9 hour delays, $1,000 CAD for delays over 9 hours. These amounts apply when the disruption is within the airline's control and not safety-related.

Flight delay & cancellation — Small carriers

Porter Airlines, Flair Airlines, Sunwing, Swoop, and Air Transat are small carriers. They must pay: $125 CAD for 3-6 hour delays, $250 CAD for 6-9 hour delays, $500 CAD for delays over 9 hours.

Denied boarding (all carriers)

If involuntarily bumped: $900 CAD for 3-6 hour delay to destination, $1,800 CAD for 6-9 hours, $2,400 CAD for 9+ hours. These are the highest payouts under APPR and apply to both large and small carriers.

Baggage compensation

Under the Montreal Convention: up to approximately $2,850 CAD (~1,519 SDR) for delayed, lost, or damaged baggage. This covers actual expenses and losses, not a flat payout. You must prove the value of your claim.

Additional obligations

Beyond cash compensation, airlines must provide: food and drink after 2 hours, hotel accommodation for overnight delays, rebooking on the next available flight, and a refund option if the delay is 3+ hours.

Is the compensation in addition to a refund?

Yes. APPR compensation is separate from refunds. If you choose not to travel, you're entitled to a full refund AND compensation. If you choose to be rebooked, you get compensation for the delay.

Are these amounts per person or per booking?

Per person. Each passenger on the booking is entitled to their own compensation claim.

Do children get compensation too?

Yes. Every ticketed passenger, including children, is entitled to compensation. Infants without their own seat (lap infants) may not qualify.
